THE “MONASTERO DI CORTONA HOTEL & SPA”

AN HISTORIC MONASTERY WITH EVERY MODERN CONFORT

The original building dates  back to the 15th century and over the centuries the Monastery has been home to the confraternity of San Rocco dedicated to caring for the sick, then to the Dominicans, the Servants of Mary, and finally the Cistercian Monks, who opened a college there. After careful renovation works carried out in compliance with the Arezzo Monuments and Fine Arts Office and the environment, in 2019 it opens its new doors as an elegant boutique Hotel.

The original monastery structure can be read in the layout of the spaces, in the beamed or vaulted ceilings, in the frescoes that have been recovered and restored, in the imposing corridors, in the loggias. All furnishings have been custom made by local craftsmen in a classic-modern style that harmoniously merges with the architecture of the building. Particular care has been taken as to the comfort of the beds. The main colours are pale and bright, with pastel touches in some rooms. The floors and bathrooms are mostly made from travertine marble, with some wooden floors. The friars’ refectory has become a large hall and the restaurant is distinctive for the fragments of frescos dating back to 1676. The oldest part has been transformed into a spa with indoor swimming pool and the central open space now features a garden and Plunge Pool. Indoor garage is available for guests of the hotel discovering the beauty of the area by car.

Unique interiors offering extraordinary spaces and comfort

The dimensions and configurations of the rooms, bathrooms and windows vary greatly. No two rooms are the same – a distinctive and charming feature of the property.

The six attic rooms with wooden floors are particularly inviting. The rooms also offer different views with some of the street, others the roof garden and swimming pool, and some the courtyard or roofs of Cortona and the valley. Even the heights of the windows from the floor differ greatly. In some attic rooms a ladder is required to see out. Wide corridors, lifts and staircases connect the rooms organized on different levels.

CLASSIC

With views of the internal cloister or the street, and medium-sized bathroom with bath or shower. Some of them are attic rooms, particularly nice. They have a high window and a small gallery to look out from, with views over the roofs of Cortona. SUPERIOR

With ceilings featuring white beams and many with decorated cornices. One of the rooms is an attic room with a lovely view over the valley, while the others overlook the street or the roof garden as well as the valley. The bathrooms are medium-sized/spacious, with bath or shower. Capacity: 2 guests, Room size: 226 sqft | 21 sqm,  Bed: king-size (5,90 x 6,56 ft | 180 x 200 cm) or twin beds (2,9 x 6,56 ft | 90 x 200 cm);

DELUXE

Floors in marble or wood, some rooms have decorated vaulted ceilings and others have white beams. The view may be of the roof garden or the street, while some offer a glimpse of the valley in the background. The bathrooms are medium-sized/spacious, most with a shower. One Deluxe room with a view of the roof garden is connected to a Superior room by an anteroom, which would be ideal as an apartment for friends or a family room. Inside the ancient refectory of the Monastery, surrounded by 17th-century frescoes and an 18th-century tapestry, our Chef will be delighted to welcome you with an “à la carte” menu that aims to enhance the proposals of the territory with Excellent raw materials and local products based on a careful selection process that starts from the land and its fruits, for a cuisine that exalts the flavours of Tuscany. A contemporary style of cooking, while respecting and exalting the rhythm of nature and the authentic flavours of our land, which will take you on a delicious experience through history and tradition. Our wine cellar houses a collection of carefully selected wines from the region and the country. Around 300 labels, perfect to enhance the enjoyment of your dining experience.

Whether it is an afternoon cocktail, an aperitif, or an after-dinner drink, the Bar is the perfect place to relax and unwind enjoying a selection of sophisticated contemporary classic cocktails, a careful choice of labels dedicated to national and international wines, signatures, and revisited drinks, such as the Earthy Negroni, a Negroni prepared with a beetroot infusion and chocolate bitters. A hymn to the Tuscan alcoholic tradition, the land where in 1919 the most international of Italian cocktails was conceived by Count Camillo Negroni.

Guests can also enjoy our cocktails and drink in our lovely rooftop garden, an ideal place especially at sunset, when the sky is colored in warm reddish and purple hues and the sun descends over the rooftops of Cortona and then sets behind the hills of the Valdichiana.

The outdoor plunge pool (not heated) is perfect for cooling down, with its size 4×8 meters, is a lovely place in our courtyard for afternoon relaxation. The plunge pool area is not provided with sunbeds, and it is not permitted to lie down on the grass.
