Hotel Mediterraneo Sorrento, Sorrento Peninsula - Naples
The “Mediterraneo Hotel”, a five-star luxury property, is in one of the most spectacular locations of the Sorrento coast, Sant’ Agnello, characterized by a breath-taking view overlooking the Bay of Naples.
Sorrento and its surrounding paradise have long roots in tourism. The town was one of the destinations of the Grand Tour, the journey made in various European countries, between the 18th and 19th centuries, by young aristocrats who thus completed their cultural formation. In no time, many illustrious visitors enhanced the beauty of the town of Tasso, which continues to exert its charm on tourists from all over the world. A plaque on the facade of the Correale di Terranova Museum recalls the names of the famous writers and artists who visited the Sorrento Peninsula at that time. Charles Dickens was also impressed by Sorrento, where - according to the well-known English novelist - “Tasso drew inspiration from the beauty that surrounded him". We must also quote the verse of the famous French critic Sainte-Beuve: "Sorrento made my sweet infinite dream". In short, many illustrious visitors extolled the beauty of the town of Tasso, which continues to exert its charm on tourists from all over the world...
“Hotel history”
With history dating back over 100 years, Hotel Mediterraneo has a long tradition of hospitality. Built by Antonietta Lauro in 1912 as a private residence, the property became a hotel more than 60 years ago. Commonly referred to as “Nonna Etta”, Antonietta Lauro was great-grandmother and grandmother of those who currently manage the Hotel; she was the sister of shipowner Achille Lauro, and wife of a famous builder in the area, Giuseppe Maresca.
At the end of the Second World War, during the Italian Civil War, the building housed refugees from the north who were “displaced” by the provisional government and sent to the Sorrento Peninsula. By the War’s end, some of them did not want to return to their homes and asked to be able to return later. This is when the six children of Antonietta had the idea of transforming their residence into a hotel. The initial name was "Terminus" because the hotel was located at the end of the street. Later the name was changed to "Mediterraneo", in honor of "our sea". Some of the original 6 siblings left the company, and partners from outside the family joined.
The structure has undergone several transformations both in size and style. In the 2000s, the Vesuvio restaurant was created, then in 2015 Vista Sky bar; which led the hotel to open to external customers. In 2021 the hotel obtained another star, following further renovations of the lobby, the restaurants, the spa, and 61 rooms: including 4 Junior Suites and 2 family rooms. Collaboration with the London architecture firm THDP began in 2017.
With the new renovation project conceived by Manuela Mannino, the goal was to combine the
international standards of luxury hotels with the enhancement of the bond with the territory. In fact, in the rooms we find fashionable and highly functional architectural solutions, made with raw materials
and colors typical of the coast: table tops and bedside tables in Vesuvian lava, parquet flooring that recalls the stilts built on the sea to expand the small Sorrento beaches, lamps that recall fishermen's lamps, decorations and wardrobes in brass; a material whose processing has its roots in the Neapolitan tradition.
The new and comfortable “Room & Suites”
After the total renovation in 2021, today the Hotel Mediterraneo offers a total of 61 rooms divided between different categories of double rooms, 4 Junior Suites and 2 family rooms.
“Food & Beverage”
Within the same hotel there are different catering concepts that will give guests very different
experiences united by quality at 360°.
“Vesuvio Panoramic Restaurant”: Vesuvio is our true symbol, the giant that characterizes the history of the Sorrento Peninsula and the Campania region. Hence the decision to dedicate the main restaurant of the hotel to it. An elegant, refined, and romantic place, with an incredible view of the Gulf of Naples, the islands, and of course Mt. Vesuvius! It has a stylish and elegant design. The room was decorated with various "tributes" to Vesuvius, starting from the paintings of the Neapolitan artist Gennaro Regina up to the buffet floors
and dishes made from lava.
It offers Mediterranean cuisine with a strong link to the Campania region. The research of Executive Chef Giuseppe Saccone is aimed at enhancing Campania's excellence with traditional recipes interpreted in a contemporary way. At the heart of the menu is the use of DOP and IGP products, such as Provolone del Monaco and extra virgin olive oil from Vico Equense; as well as many homemade products, starting with crackers, breadsticks, arriving at the inevitable and delicious fresh pasta.
Among the most popular dishes of 2023 we have: “Il Tricolore” which is a delicious and light aubergine parmigiana; “Reviewing the tradition” the reinterpretation of the iconic gnocchi alla sorrentina; “The Queen of the Seas” a very delicate slice of amberjack cooked on salt flavored with local herbs, mint flavored roasted artichokes. Among the desserts, our pastry chef's interpretation of tiramisu is certainly one of the most popular.
The Panoramic Vesuvio Restaurant offers various tasting itineraries such as:
“La Tradizione’: A menu that re-proposes the dishes that grandmother "Etta", founder of the hotel, loved to cook in the 1950s for her guests and family members. Our Chef has interpreted these delicacies using our special local products. The kitchen is the story of life, culture and roots!
"Di tutto un pò": which is conceived as a broad but fast itinerary for those who like to try more dishes without spending too much time at the table. This menu revises the typical Neapolitan diner service in a “fine dining” setting: a lot of small starters served as “tapas”, a main course, and to end, multiple small desserts.
“Che Sorpresa”: a surprise 5-course menu that includes the dishes that most represent the Chef. A journey through smells, flavours, and textures that leads to the discovery of our interpretation of the great culinary tradition of Campania. This tasting is also available in a vegetarian and vegan version. The wine list is also focused on regional excellence. A wide selection of Campania wines that embraces both the most famous wineries and small emerging winemakers.
Our Maître and Sommelier Salvatore Iaccarino has developed various food & wine pairing proposals.
“Gli Scugnizzi” is the itinerary that accompanies the food with tastings of high-quality wines produced by small emerging wineries.
“I Mammasantissima” instead offers famous and prestigious labels and wines representative of the Campania region.
The offer is completed by an important presence of Italian and French bubbles and the "home bar" corner which offers high quality aperitifs and after dinner drinks.
The Vesuvio Roof is open by reservation also to non-resident guests.
“Aqua Pool Lounge”: a beautiful green space by the pool, where delicious summer lunches are served. The environment is relaxed and informal. The menu focuses on simple preparations that combine local products (mozzarella cheese and Sorrento tomatoes, Sorrento gnocchi, grilled local fish) with some musts of international cuisine (Caesar salad, club sandwiches, hamburgers). A prominent point in its gastronomic offering is reserved for wood-fired pizza, available in many different versions that use local products.
Once a week during the summer, it is transformed, to host splendid dinner shows that see different companies of artists performing in singing, dance, and choreographic sets.
“Vista Sky bar”: The Vista Sky Bar is the roof-top bar of Hotel Mediterraneo Sorrento. Opened in 2015 it immediately became a point of reference in the Sorrento Peninsula for its splendid sunsets and musical evenings. The sunsets and musical evenings are truly unforgettable. What makes this experience unique is the 360° view over the Gulf and the hills of Sorrento, the environment, the welcoming service, the excellent music, and the food and wine proposals.
The cocktails of the Head Bartender Arturo Iaccarino along with the best wines and Champagne are combined with a careful selection of the finest dishes from all over the globe (raw seafood, caviar, Pata Negra, black cod, waygu beef etc).
Music has always been the star. Dj sets and live bands alternate in the artistic programming of the summer. Artists with the likes of Steve Edwards, Barbara Tucker, Robert Owens, José Padilla, and Claudio Coccoluto have played on this beautiful terrace.
This year the artistic programming will also be full of top-level artists including collaborations with Roberto Barone and the DJs of Radio Yacht, with DJs and producers Alaja and Gallo, DJ Dario Guida, and many others ...
The Vista Sky bar is a very popular location for weddings, ceremonies of various kinds, parties, and photo shoots.
“Oltremare Lounge Bar”: Oltremare, inaugurated in 2023, is a hidden gem located in the hotel lobby. It is a place characterized by a design inspired by the colours of our sea and the sunset light that filters through the large panoramic windows. Here it is possible to relax sipping an aperitif, tasting some seafood specialties accompanied by wine or champagne, or simply drinking a signature cocktail prepared by the barman Arturo Iaccarino after dinner. Oltremare is also a meeting place open every evening from 6pm to midnight even to the non-resident guests. Every evening there is a DJ set with lounge music.THE CHEF: Giuseppe Saccone, born in 1975, was born in Torre del Greco and has lived on the Amalfi Coast for many years.
After an internship at the “Albereta” restaurant, managed by Maestro Gualtiero Marchesi, the doors of haute cuisine were opened to him in 2000. It was in this year that he held the position of head chef in the prestigious kitchen of the Sirenuse hotel in Positano, at the time directed by chef Enrico Crippa. It was this experience that made him understand the importance of a rigorous working method and research into the quality of raw materials.
After various experiences in Italian regions, he holds the role of Chef at prestigious hotels on the Amalfi coast.
In 2009, Giuseppe Saccone arrived at the Hotel Mediterraneo Sorrento. Thanks to him and his team, the restaurant has become one of the strengths of the structure.
In recent years there have been numerous collaborations for special evenings and training stages with prestigious starred chefs of the caliber of Enrico Crippa (Piazza Duomo restaurant), Paolo Barrale (Aria restaurant), Giuseppe d 'Errico (La Madernassa restaurant), Roberto Allocca (Marennà restaurant), Valentino Palmisano (Vespasia restaurant of Norcia) and Francesco Sodano (Hotel Faro in Capo d'Orso).
New and comfortable, an elegant spa, an outdoor swimming pool surrounded by a fragrant Mediterranean garden, a refined restaurant, and a panoramic lounge bar with a breathtaking view of the sea. The hotel has direct access to the sea, on the beautiful Marinella beach, with an exclusive area set up specifically for guests.
“The extra luxury services”:
A boat is available for private hire (with skipper) to visit the islands and the whole coast; dinners on board
for special occasions and VIP services (limo, guides, interpreters, excursions to excellent wineries), etc.
“The philosophy of the hotel”
The Mediterraneo hashtag is #theplacetobe. The hotel is like a "big home", where everyone feels at ease, a meeting place to spend moments of fun and relaxation and have an unforgettable experience at 360 degrees. The atmosphere is elegant, but at the same time friendly and without unnecessary formality. For years the property has been very attentive to environmental and eco-sustainability issues with the aim of achieving important goals to be "plastic free".
An important aspect of the Mediterraneo is weddings, which is why they have an experienced and dedicated wedding planning service available.
